Coasts is a sound installation placed inside a shipping container in the Gabes Cinema Fen Film Festival exhibition. This project is the third instalment from Cramer’s archive of ocean recordings, which were made in various coastal regions from Baja California in Mexico, to Tavira in Portugal, Kumano in Japan, and Bergen in Norway. The container is placed in such a way that it opens to the Gulf of Gabes. The architecture of the space allows the visitor to focus on the recording or, by moving through the space, experience an overlap of the distant recorded sea and the waves breaking outside, at the beach of the Mediterranean Sea.

Daniel Gustav Cramer

Born in 1975 in Neuss, Germany. Lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Working across sculpture, photography, film, sound, and text, Daniel Gustav Cramer’s practice draws on our collective experiences and shared memories to create a form of fragmented storytelling. The narratives the artist produce reference moments from his biography, scenes from the literary canon, as well as archives, both official, as in the United States Air Force’s research determining the threat of UFOs, and amateur, as in the registry of undocumented ghost towns abandoned in the American West, as equally futile attempts to map the world we inhabit. Cramer’s works cohere to suggest a travellers journal as a piece of open ended research into the human condition.
